    The turning point

This entry is Part 8 of 14 in the series Testimony: Called To Serve

The year 1999 was The Turning Point, in many ways.

Our church had moved into our cosy little building the year before and we were growing. Our missions program was also growing – this was the year the Lord enabled one faithful missionary with a huge heart for souls (the Filipina who was my room mate at 1997 camp) to start our campus ministry in the Philippines.

In 1999, the Lord led me into three different ministries in the church where I could be effective for Him.

One of them started like this – a friend was appointed the treasurer and every Sunday after service she descended to the basement to count the offerings. I was ‘enlisted’ to be one of the counters, and thus, every week, there would be two or three of us pouring out the offerings from the bags, and counting the cheques and cash.

As time went on, as our missions financial needs were growing, the treasurer was unable to take care of both church and missions offerings. One fine day, I was asked to take over that responsibility.

Members who had made pledges to support our workers in the Philippines started to look me up to hand over their pledge money monthly. My skills gleaned from the banking industry which I was working in at that time equipped me for the task of balancing cash, remitting funds overseas and keeping accounts.

At the end of 1998, I was also recruited into the camp committee (for the 1999 church camp). I had no idea how many people the camp director had approached and asked, but when he asked me, I prayed about it and saw no reason why I should turn down the opportunity to serve.

We had many fun meetings together. I could handle some of the administrative matters e.g. writing the FAQs, plus the task of designing and producing the camp booklet. It was fun! I helped out in another camp committee a couple of years later.

And so… Number one – counting church funds and collecting funds for missions, Number two – church camp committee.

What of the third ministry I found myself involved in?

    to be continued… ;)

I remember the first time I saw the little purple flowers on the mountains in Tibet. They were soooo simply beautiful. And I thought, what a pity that no one but me may ever see these. And then I thought, maybe God makes beautiful things, not to make us happy, but for His own pleasure and because He just enjoys making and having beautiful creations.

This was about 4… Read More....

School has begun! I started teaching on Monday of this week. I am teaching in the English department of my school and am very excited to be working with my students. I have loved all my students from year one to now but because these kids are English majors their English is a little better so we can discuss more in-depth topics and get to know each other a little… Read More....
