The more we have, the more we spend

The scripture warns of that very truth with these word, “When goods increase, they increase who eat them; so what profit have the owners except to see them with their eyes?” (Ecclesiastes 5:11). A recent study showed that households with incomes under $10,000 a year gave 5.5% of their income to charities, whereas those earning more than $100,000 a year gave 2.9% to charities.

Why is it when a person’s income increases their giving decreases-the answer; the more you have, the more you want. The more you want, the more you spend. The more you spend, the more you need. The more you need, the more you have to have.

Newsweek magazine ran an article entitled “The Affliction of Affluence” and stated ‘the more money people have the less satisfied they become. People end up spending all their time making money and they have no time to spend the money they make. Soon time becomes more valuable than money and you cannot buy more time. Those who have the time to spend the money they make get dissatisfied with their purchases because they soon discover something better.” Man becomes like that dog chasing its tail once he gets what he is after he soon discovers pain rather than pleasure.

Paul had the right view of earthly treasures when he said, “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need” (Philippines 4:11-12).

As always, time goes by so quick. The spring semester flew by and now I am in the process of moving to a new city. After the whirlwind of activities over the last few months, I finally have a few minutes to catch my breath before summer camp starts so I thought I’d take a moment to update you on how He is working… Read More....

School has begun! I started teaching on Monday of this week. I am teaching in the English department of my school and am very excited to be working with my students. I have loved all my students from year one to now but because these kids are English majors their English is a little better so we can discuss more in-depth topics and get to know each other a little… Read More....

Over the last week I was privileged to take a couple trips to other places of interest in the northeast. As we drove across the land to our destination, I looked out upon miles and miles of well-manicured corn rows. No land is wasted; every square inch is used to grow something that is useful for living; very little if any land is left to grow just plain grass. Everything… Read More....
