I’ve been asked by Western mission boards help their missionaries “navigate” their way in Asian airports. They are concerned that their missionaries will not be able to find their way in airports in exotic lands like Beijing, China. I guess, they were expecting all the signs to be in strange Chinese characters! Even some Asian missionaries Last night I got a call from a friend in the US telling me that his brother, who was supposed to speak at some mission conferences in Singapore, was unable to board the plane because his passport’s validity was less than 6 months! He asked me if there was something that I could do to I have often heard statements like: “There is so much anti-Christian persecution in Indonesia, isn’t it foolish for you to go there?” And I would reply: “There are 17,000 islands in Indonesia – so I have no problem finding one where it is peaceful!” The truth is that I will probably have no problem finding 16,999 I often read in the newspaper of people being robbed in poor countries. I’ve been on hundreds of mission trips in poor countries, often lived for prolonged periods in city slums, and rural kampongs, slept on crowded long-distance overnight buses and ferry-boats – and have only been pick-pocketed once. That happened in the early days Our Lord commands us to be “wise as serpents, and harmless as doves” when we go into the mission field (Matthew 10:16).
