How to plan for a missions trip

This entry is Part 1 of 6 in the series How To Plan A Mission Trip

I came back from my latest mission trip about two weeks ago. Four of us went on a missions trip to Cambodia to visit churches and a children’s home, and we had two newbies, who had never been to Cambodia before, with us. One of them had never been on a mission trip before. I love to have new faces with us. They make the trip so much more interesting!

Newbies ask lots of questions, and in particular, during these 3 stages – 1) to decide whether to go or not to go, 2) after they have decided to go, they’ll ask about the trip itself and what to expect, and finally 3) during the trip itself, they ask what’s this, that and the other.

I am no expert on missions, but having been on over 30 trips to various Asian countries, I supposed I am able to draw on my own experiences to share these with others.

Planning for a mission trip especially to an Asian region or country – very often, the person desiring to visit a particular work in a particular country have the desire because they have heard a lot about it, or seen pictures, or have friends who have been there and shared a lot about it. Perhaps they have been supporting the work through their giving of funds. And so, the desire is there, but very often, they also hesitate, and ask many questions, and in the end, do not go! Ah well, blame the fear factor. Their friends who had been there also liked to talk too much about the difficulties!

We must never discount God. He touches and lays the burden on certain people to want to go on a particular mission trip. And if the Lord had spoken to you to go, and the way seems open, do you then change your mind, because of some unknown fear factor??

Positioning to live within a community – Tim is a tentmaker. For prudent reasons, we cannot divulge his real name or citizenship. He did not go to another country but had to make a cross cultural leap within his own country.

Tim has had a growing burden for the majority people group in his country. In this country, it is against the law for this mainstream people group to… Read More....

A few weeks ago, a co-worker of mine who is married to a Korean Christian worker told me something interesting. She said “Korean missionaries unite around the Gospel but we bring our differences to the mission field and fight over them!”

Koreans are basically a strong militant race. They do not shun a fight. The Korean Christian population is also clearly divided into conservative Presbyterians and exuberant Charismatics. In… Read More.... | 1 Comment

Going back to the Philippines for winter break is something I truly looked forward to. After a not so normal Christmas and New Year/birthday celebration in China, I was more than ready to hibernate and enjoy the sun in my home country alone. But as usual, plans change every minute. As Hudson Taylor said, “ Man proposes, God disposes.” Being at the center of His will though is still the… Read More.... | 1 Comment

my experience is don’t just believe in what others say (unless its obvious riots / earthquake)…not that they lie but different people have different fear level. in short, its still best to check out yourself!

    Hi

I thought of going on a family mission trip with my husband and 3 children age 14, 12 & 9. Dates that we are looking at is Dec 27 to 31. We want to instil in our children the importance of reaching out to others and at the same time for them to have fun as well. Any advise ??

there is a youth missions trip to Canbodia, however, you need to shift your dates to fit the schedule departure out of S’pore on the 19th till 29th dec.
have just came back from Cambodia trip and must say it is an eye opener, plenty to learn, see, experience and share.
      truly an enriching experience.
