God pushes me into China!

This entry is Part 2 of 3 in the series Open Doors For Missions In China

When the conference ended and when we bid goodbye to each other, I thought that it would be the last time that I would see Uncle J.

I was busy with many Christian missions projects in several other countries. China was not a logical choice because I did not speak Chinese. I had failed Chinese language in school consistently and, when I was given the chance, had chosen to study Malay as my second language.

Furthermore, I had an aversion to China. I had grown up in a home where China was considered the last place on earth to visit. I had been brain-washed from my youth to love the West. I was indeed an banana – yellow on the outside and white on the inside.

However, when I returned to Singapore, I could not put China out of my mind! i kept thinking of the lost in China! I kept thinking of Uncle J’s stories of the faith of the Chinese Christians!

Finally, I felt compelled to invite Uncle J to our church to speak. I knew that he was paranoid because of his Cultural Revolution experiences and that he did not easily trust people. Maybe I was wishing that he would decline my invitation and then I would be free from having anything more to do with China.

However, he readily accepted my invitation. By this time I had begun to study Chinese from a little travel dictionary. So when we met again, we were able to converse. It was no more a chicken and duck conversation. This time our relationship was more like that of a father and his 5 year old son. He spoke simply and slowly and I seemed to understand every thing that he said. I am convinced that the Holy Spirit is a wonderful translator!

After his visit to our church. He asked me to visit China with him. I was convinced that God was in this, so how could I refuse?

I determined to work harder at my Chinese vocabulary. The little dictionary became my constant companion!

The shock of everything is now starting to sink in and the dust is starting to settle some.

The ultrasound specialist, after much trying, was finally able to see some of our unborn baby’s face and mouth and confirmed the cleft lip which is on the right side. She also said that she saw a gap in the hard palate which is the front of the mouth. It is… Read More....

There was the old grandma who was being cared for by her daughter and son. One day as I was reading my Bible, the daughter asked me about it and I told her what I was reading. She was excited and told me that she had one too and was a part of God’s family. I knew there was something different about her. She took such gentle care of her… Read More....

A few months ago I was thinking to myself, “I don’t have any real China stories.” A ‘China’ story is the kind that can only happen to you in China (of course) but really sets your time here apart from anything else you’ve experienced in your life; it’s something that you think, “I’ve never experienced anything like this!” and somehow it changes you. Well, it finally happened. After two years… Read More....

  • China is a very exciting mission field. And it is indeed very huge country. If you want to know how big is China compared to Singapore, just look at your palm which represent China. Where is Singapore on the palm? Ha, we are as small as the sweat pore on our palm. Barely visible with the naked eyes.
I was also plunged into the China mission field a couple of years ago. The thing that impressed me most was the way the Christians from the house churches pray. Their prayers are simply so earnest.

The mission opportunity in China may not last very long. My recent trip to China last year made me very sad. The Chinese are now overwhelmed by materialism.

The rural Chinese know how to pray bec they have much practice! When they are sick and don’t have money to go to the doctor, they pray.
We go to the doctor and if he can’t help us, then we go to the specialist.
When they are financially empty, they pray. We go to our ATM’s.
In a very real sense, the only time we really need God is when we have cancer!

You are right about the rural Chinese but not for those from the cities. Things have changed in the cities. The believers now have handphone and they are attracted to materialism. When they need money or help, they call people instead of calling unto GOD like those in the rural areas.

The door to China may not remain open for a long time.
When people begin to become wealthier they depend more on the confidence they have of their material possession and bank accounts.

In every opportunity God presents to us, there is a “window period” after which the window is shut!
The Holy Spirit is still working in China, esp on the college campuses. But for how long??
The “window” to the rural churches is slowly but surely closing shut already.
It’s time to get into the campuses NOW.
