God provides in Sabah

This entry is Part 7 of 11 in the series Sabah Literacy Class Start-Up

Since our coordinator had backed out of the Sabah literacy project we felt that it was not His will for us to continue renovating the house.

We prayed for His guidance and He opened a marvelous new way for us. The owner of the land in the kampong offered us her garage to be used as the schoolhouse.

This dear lady herself had arrived in Sabah from the Philippines many years ago. I presume that she too struggled to survive when she first arrived. However, she married a Malaysian, who in later life became a fairly senior government official. So she became a Malaysian citizen. Her husband was the one who owned all the land on which this entire kampong was situated. He died a few years ago and she is now a widow. She is now the landlady of the entire kampong. The people pay her a small annual rental to stay on the land. And they also pay her a monthly amount for their water and electrictiy.

When she heard about our plans to start a literacy center to teach the kids, she was enthusiastic to see the plan succeed. Many of the kids in the kampong were her relatives. Their families had probably moved to Sabah because of her.

She had been on the pilgrimage to Mecca and she knew that we were of a different religion from her but she knew that we really wanted to help the kids. She told us that her garage would be a good place to start the literacy center.

In fact, it was ideal! It was so much better than the rickety house that we were trying to renovate! The garage could be converted into 2 small classrooms. The covered porch in front of the garage could be used as a semi open air classroom. And the area around the garage could be used as a playground for the kids! God had answered our prayers and given us a ready made school house.

She not only offered us her place but also her advice and protection! She knew the law of the land and told us that we were not breaking the law by helping them to help their own kids. After all we did not collect a cent from the kids and were mere volunteers do our best to help them.

She also said that if there were queries from the authorities, she would be the one to explain to them.

God had truly answered our prayers exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think!

There was the old grandma who was being cared for by her daughter and son. One day as I was reading my Bible, the daughter asked me about it and I told her what I was reading. She was excited and told me that she had one too and was a part of God’s family. I knew there was something different about her. She took such gentle care of her… Read More....

A few months ago I was thinking to myself, “I don’t have any real China stories.” A ‘China’ story is the kind that can only happen to you in China (of course) but really sets your time here apart from anything else you’ve experienced in your life; it’s something that you think, “I’ve never experienced anything like this!” and somehow it changes you. Well, it finally happened. After two years… Read More....
